SkyTrackers, made by Ballantyne of Omaha, came about to answer the need for a compact, attractive alternative to the traditional Carbon Arc searchlights. Not that there is anything wrong with carbon arc, but bear in mind they were made for WWII. What wasn't blown up was usually left to rot (see So You Think It's Easy..). In other words, supply is really limited. Nicely restored Carbon Arcs are impressive beasts to behold.

As it turns out, SkyTrackers- which use Xenon lamp technology- augment and complement carbon arc's very well. Range is not as far as the Carbon Arc lamps, but they do quite well in nearfield environments.

Particularly suited to tight areas, such as city streets or congested business areas.
